I’m Pinterested (a Whimsical Wednesday post)

April 10, 2013 by Leah Stirewalt 7 Comments

As I mentioned on Monday, I’m trying to get consistently back to regular blogging, which has always been a passion, but I’ve allowed the busy-ness of life to interfere lately. My Monday Makeover posts will remain as I explained on Monday, but today I’d like to also introduce Whimsical Wednesdays. Webster defines “whimsical” as 1) full of or exhibiting whims and 2) subject to unpredictable change (among other things). I wanted to set aside a day where my posts could be just that…unpredictable.

Wednesday posts will focus on more lighthearted, fun, crafty, creative, and “whimsical” ideas. For instance, I may…on a “whim”…decide to create a new bucket list and share it with you to get feedback or more ideas. I might post a tutorial of a Pinterest-inspired craft project I’ve recently completed. I may do a VLOG – video blog – so that I can just stop by and say “hello” to you outside of the print medium. Or- I might just share pics of a family adventure. I might have “list day” – where I list my favorite things. Who knows….it’ll be unpredictable, yet fun (at least for me…ha!).

I know some of you follow my posts to keep in touch with my life story. That’ll still be here…just not as much on Wednesdays. Some stop by to read my devotional postings that have been created out of my genuine life experiences. Those will also still be here…more on that Friday. But, some of you might just want a day to sit back, relax and breathe for a few minutes. Hence, Whimsical Wednesdays.

As hinted at in the title of today’s post…I’m a bit of Pinterest junkie. If you’ve never ventured into the “Land of P” before…I caution you…beware…you may just not want to leave. That’s me! I love Pinterest because of the ideas I can find there…maybe how to decorate a bathroom or how to make a wreath. You can find recipes, makeup tips, book suggestions, homeschool ideas, adoption fundraising tips, and the list is endless. For me, I especially love DIY projects, and that’s what I seem to use Pinterest for most of all these days!

This past summer, I stopped off at my favorite re-use store, Resource, in Hickory, NC to pick up junk…yes, literally someone’s junk that had been donated in hopes that some creative type out there might repurpose for a new treasure…in this case, me! All monies received go to a great non-profit rescue mission for battered women, so it’s a win-win place to shop for me! Recently, I had been seeing LOTS of Pinterest posts using old wine bottles, and Resource just happened to have a whole bin of empty wine bottles in the store for around 25 – 50 cents each (depending on the size/look). I snatched up quite a few. Now…this was LAST summer, and until this week…I hadn’t crafted anything with those old bottles. Well, until now…

I found a lovely little design that would work well for simple spring decor, and I knew instantly I wanted to make my own version.

In addition to the recycled wine bottle I already had in my collection…the other materials I used: jute/hemp (180 lb version), glue suitable for glass (E6000 works great!), an accent piece or two to decorate the bottle (I found some clearanced out butterflies for mine), and a hot glue gun to add the accent piece(s). You may also wish to use ribbon, lace, etc…the possibilities are endless.

IMG_3377My hunky hubby was gracious to help me with this one. While it certainly works fine as a one-person project, it went much quicker with both of us working on it together…one to hold the bottle and rotate it by adding the jute with the other one applying the glue.

In summary, we now have this cute little vase that now also contains some colorful silk spring stems sitting in the center of our table for all of us to enjoy!

Meet Leah

Leah StirewaltI became "twice widowed" when my beloved prince, Joel, went to his Heavenly home after a brief and sudden illness on February 12, 2017. I’m in a place of shock and devastation, but I intend to use this format to journal my second widow journey, much like I did my first. It’s my open journal, my electronic oasis, and it’s often the place I find true healing as I allow myself to “come clean” with my feelings. Read More...
